A technology company tracked utility use across its sites to measure sustainability goals

How a technology company in North America centralized utility readings across offices and facilities in Asset Infinity to measure sustainability milestones.

The client

The client is a large technology company headquartered in Toronto, with offices, development centers and data facilities across North America.

The company had set internal sustainability targets. Measuring progress against them depended on utility data from every site, and each site reported its consumption separately.

The challenge

Utility information was spread across locations and separate reporting processes. Without a central view, the company could not compare consumption between sites or measure its progress over time.

  • Utility data was spread across offices, development centers and facilities.
  • Each location reported consumption through its own process.
  • Consumption patterns could not be compared across sites.
  • Progress against sustainability milestones was hard to measure.
  • Utility figures were consolidated by hand from multiple facilities.

What they set up in Asset Infinity

The company recorded utility meters and readings for every site in Asset Infinity, with consumption reports and history in one place.

Meters for every site

Offices, development centers and facilities are set up as locations, each with the utility services and consumption points that serve it. (Energy)

Structured reading capture

Facility teams enter readings against each meter in the same way, so consumption is recorded consistently at every site. (Energy)

Consumption reporting

Reports show consumption by site and over time, so patterns and trends can be compared across locations. (Insight)

History for sustainability reviews

Historical consumption is kept for every meter, giving dependable data for internal sustainability reviews. (Insight)

How it works day to day

Here is how utility data now flows from each site to the sustainability review.

  1. Facility team: takes meter readings. Each site’s facility team records readings against its utility meters in the web or mobile app.
  2. System: builds consumption history. Each reading adds to the meter’s history, so consumption for any site and period is available without a spreadsheet.
  3. Facility manager: checks the site’s trend. The facility manager compares the site’s consumption with earlier periods and spots unusual use early.
  4. Sustainability team: compares sites. Reports set consumption at each office, development center and facility side by side.
  5. System: sends scheduled reports. Consumption reports go out on a schedule, so nobody compiles them by hand for each review.
  6. Sustainability team: measures progress. Historical data shows consumption over time, which is the basis for tracking progress toward the company’s internal milestones.
  7. Facilities leadership: plans efficiency work. Clear trends show where efficiency initiatives are most needed, and later whether they made a difference.

How it rolled out

  1. Assessment. Utility records, locations, sustainability goals and reporting practices were reviewed.
  2. Sites and meters set up. Locations were configured, and utility services and consumption points were mapped across them.
  3. Teams trained. Facility teams were trained on readings and reports, and reporting was refined to support sustainability tracking.

The results

  • Central view of utility consumption across offices and facilities.
  • Consumption patterns monitored consistently across locations.
  • Sustainability reviews backed by structured historical data.
  • Less manual consolidation of utility data from multiple facilities.
  • Efficiency initiatives planned from clearer consumption trends.

Why it worked

Same method at every site

Readings are captured the same way everywhere, so sites can be compared fairly.

History builds itself

Each reading adds to the record, so the data on progress over time is ready when reviews come.

Data the targets can rest on

Sustainability milestones are measured on dependable consumption data instead of compiled figures.

Looking ahead

With Asset Infinity, the company moved from fragmented utility reporting to central consumption tracking across offices, development centers and facilities. Teams monitor energy use and compare sites from consistent records.

Manual reporting has dropped, and the company measures progress toward its internal sustainability milestones with data it can rely on.
